Clouds Series

This series is from a trip to Ireland where Gillian was part of an artist’s residency program. She continued to work on this series for several years after her trip.

She was very inspired by the landscape in Ireland. But the greatest influence was in how the sky was always changing with so many dramatic clouds. The clouds overpowered the landscape, often diminishing the land below.

Gillian was also taken with the Irish mythology and studied it extensively while there.

The clouds occasionally portrayed images of creatures and animals, reminding us of the ancient history of Ireland.

Gillian frequently takes a subject from nature and abstracts the image. Here in this series, she has blown up the clouds to simple forms, adding color and transparency to her drawings and paintings. Her use of charcoal, pastel and oil has transformed “cloud images” to a different level.
